Swiss Women's and Men's Teams to Face Czech Republic in European Championship in Yverdon
The Swiss National Rugby Teams (Men’s and Women’s) will face the Czech Republic in their respective European Championships (Rugby Europe Trophy) on Saturday, November 17th, in Yverdon-les-Bains. It will be the first time in the history of Swiss Rugby as well as Rugby Europe that the men’s and women’s senior national teams of two countries will face each other in a European Championship match on the same day, in the same stadium.
The Swiss Men’s national team starts its 3rd European Campaign in the “Rugby Europe Trophy” (2nd Division in European Rugby = TOP 18 teams in Europe). Last season the team finished in 4th place of this European Championship. This year Switzerland will face Portugal (who just lost its play-off match against Romania from the higher division), the Netherlands, Poland, Lithuania, and the Czech Republic.
The goal for the 2018-19 season will be to finish in the top 3, which would be synonymous of ensuring safety from relegation, and would allow Switzerland to solidify its place in the top 15 nations in Europe.
For the first match of the season, the team of coaches Olivier Nier and Mathieu Guyou will face a Czech Republic team which closely beat them 17-13 last year, in a badly- executed match for Switzerland, which left the team with a lot of regrets. The Men of the Edelweiss will therefore be longing for a rematch, with their hearts set on a victorious start of their European Campaign, in this match in Yverdon-les-Bains.
The new season has already started (badly) for the Czech Republic, with 2 defeats in September and October: 22-41 at home against Poland and 30-10 away in Lithuania. The Czech Republic is therefore pretty much facing a must-win in Switzerland to keep its hopes alive of staying in the Rugby Europe Trophy.
For their part, the Swiss Women’s National Team finished its last European Championship in 2016 in 11th place (narrowly staying in the Top 12 in Europe), which marked its last officials European Competition. For the 2018-19 season, the Swiss Ladies will compete in the new Rugby Europe Women’s Trophy (2nd Division in Europe) against the Czech Republic, Finland, and Sweden. However, following Sweden’s exit from the competition, the rest of the matches will be disputed only between the 3 remaining teams.
Thanks to its 20-5 victory against Finland in Helsinki on October 13th, Switzerland started its European Campaign with a winning record. Now they will face the Czech Republic, whom the Women of the Edelweiss beat with difficulty in Madrid in 2016. The Czech team has strengthened its ranks by integrating its 7s national team players, who has had great success at the European 7s Championships. The Czech therefore present a mighty offensive threat, which will be a big challenge the Swiss will have to face. This match in Yverdon-les-Bains will also be the first official home game in 3 years for the ladies of Swiss Coach Emmanuel Révert.
The Swiss Rugby Day in Yverdon-les-Bains represents a historical moment for Swiss Rugby and for Rugby Europe: it will be the first time in the history of the Rugby Europe Trophy, that the women’s and men’s teams of two countries will face each other in this competition on the same day in the same stadium.
Other historical moment for Swiss Rugby: on the morning of the same day, the largest ever national camp for junior girls will take place, organized by the Swiss Rugby Union in Yverdon-les-Bains. Afterwards, all the young players from the camp are invited to the stadium to watch the two big matches and to meet and greet the women’s senior national team after their match.
The coaches of the two Swiss Teams just announced their selections for the 2 matches against the Czech Republic (See team lists attached)
