Schaffhausen, 13.04.2019 - On a crisp April afternoon, the Swiss Team beat Lithuania in an exciting and high-scoring match, by a score of 34-24, in front of an excited crowd of nearly 1000 spectators.
In the curtain-raiser, the Swiss Women’s Team faced the French Gendarmerie selection in a friendly match, losing 22-32.
The first Suisse Rugby Day event ever to be held in Schaffhausen, saw the day opening with a kids’ tournament featuring 90 youngsters from several clubs across the Swiss-German region.
In the Women’s Test match, the home team opened the scoring with a try in the 2nd minute by second rower Julie Gaudin. For the rest of the 1st half, the Swiss and the French team were evenly matches, exchanging tries at the 8th, 19th, and 32nd minute, for a halftime score of 17-17.
The second half started out much like the first one left off. Both teams traded tries with winger Amélie Despax touching down for the French in the 41st minute and Angela Stadelmann for the Swiss in the 46th. The score: 22-22 with 30 minutes left to play. With the teams still evenly matched, it wasn’t until the last quarter that the French took the upper hand. Hooker Audrey Barut and Center Victoria Marragou rounded out the scoring with a try each, for a final score of 22-32 to the French team.
On the men’s side, it was also the home side who got onto the scoreboard first and really quickly, with Lucas Heinrich scoring two highlight-reel tries by capturing cross-field kicks by Jules Porcher at the 3rd and 21st minute. Nevertheless, the guests stayed in good touch, and scored tries of their own at the 7th, 21st, and 40th minute. Thanks to 4 Porcher penalties, however, the halftime score was 24-17 to Switzerland.
Starting the second half in the afternoon sun with short shadows under their boots, it was the Swiss who first got themselves back onto the scoreboard when Donovan O’Grady slotted a penalty for his side at the 50th minute. After constant warnings from the referee, the guests were unable to correct either their scrum or their breakdown infringements, leading to two front-row yellow cards in the space of 6 minutes (62nf and 68th minute) both prompted by the great work of Swiss Man of the Match Vincent Vial.
The penalty try at the 68th minute put the Swiss back into a more comfortable lead: 34-17. To their credit, Lithuania secured a try-scoring bonus point by getting over the line at the 70th minute with 13 men: Domantas Baguzis scored the try at the 70th minute to seal the final score of 34-24 to Switzerland. With the win, Switzerland not only delighted the home crowd of first-time hosts RC Schaffhausen, but also secured 3rd place in the 2018-2019 Rugby Europe Trophy.
The Swiss Rugby Union would like to thank the organizers RC Schaffhausen, all the staff and volunteers, and the fans for the wonderful rugby day.
