Switzerland beats Moldova 29-26 in second match of Rugby Europe Trophy
Yverdon-les-Bains, 26/11/2016 - In their second outing in the space of just 7 days in the Rugby Europe Trophy, Switzerland beat Moldova in a tightly contested and exciting match.
After showing great promise a week before, in the team's debut in the 3rd European Division (TOP18) against Portugal, this week Nier and Melville's men gave their coaches a win in only the second official match in charge of the team.
On a cold but dry november afternoon, it was the Men of the Edelweiss who opened the scoring thanks to Simon Perrod's boot, which gave them the 3-0 lead in the 7th minute. Not long after, it was the powerful forwards of the guests who got the ball over the line and the Moldovan team into the lead with 3 points to 5. The nearly flawless Simon Perrod scored a beautiful 45 meter penalty to put the Swiss back in a narrow 6-5 lead before the halftime, but once again the Moldovan forward pack overpowered the Swiss defence making the halftime score 6-12.
After the break, the Swiss team came out with a new direction and new kind of motivation, after a doubtlessly serious discussion with the coaches in the sheds. The Swiss team put in place a relentless rhythm and ran the ball and its opponents all over the park in the second 40 minutes. This effort paid off through an unanswered try in the 47th minute, penalties in the 58th and 64th, and another try in the 70th minute. 39 minutes of breathless and exciting running rugby had passed in the second half before the guests could find an answer to the Swiss team's rhythm.
In the dying minutes of the match, the Moldovan team managed to cross the line two more times making the final score 29-26, with a narrow victory to Switzerland.
With this win, the Swiss team takes a big step towards maintenance in the 3rd European division, a competition played over the course of just one season, with 5 matches deciding who stays and who is relegated.
Next, the Swiss team will host the Ukraine on the 11th of March 2017, and will then travel to Netherlands and Poland on the 18th of March and the 22nd of April, 2017.
The Swiss Rugby Union would like to thank Rugby Club Yverdon for the great organization of the last two matches.
