Switzerland loses to favourite Portugal 10-28 despite strong debut in Rugby Europe Trophy
Yverdon-les-Bains, 19.11.2016 – on an unexpectedly mild and sunny autumn afternoon in the canton of Vaud, the newly promoted Swiss National Rugby team had its debut in the European Trophy “Rugby Europe Trophy” (TOP 18 in Europe) against a highly favoured Portugese, newly relegated from the higher division.
Despite the guests going ahead 7-0 with a quick try in the second minute of the game, Switzerland managed to close the gap quickly to 3-7 through a penalty kick. The guests then raised the score through a penalty kick of their own to 3-10. However, not long into the second half, a Swiss team dominating the scrums, tied the game 10-10 thanks to a penalty try earned by their scrum.
Switzerland showed an attractive and exciting attacking-style rugby, and stayed right in the game through the 60th minute. Only in the last quarter of the game, the experienced and physical Portuguese managed the subdue the hosts, to win the game 10-28.
The Swiss team showed great potential and proved to certainly belong in this group, after its promotion last april. The next game for Switzerland happens only a week later: on November 26th Switzerland will host Moldova, the match taking place in Yverdon once more.
