Great success for the 1st Swiss Women's XVs open training of 2019
Luzern, March 2-3, 2019 - In order to build on a positive 2018 season and to keep strengthening the team, the first training of 2019 was open to all players willing to join the squad for the 2019 season.
53 senior players attended the 2-days training camp organised in Luzern.
The Switzerland LNF-A and LNF-B coaches had been invited to select promising players and to encourage them to attend. 14 Swiss clubs were represented.
With 21 players who took part in one or both Rugby Europe Trophy games in 2018, 15 new players who were training with a Swiss National team for the first time, the former Swiss Girls' U18 Captain and more, the group was a mix of experience and youth (full list below).
As the Swiss Girls U18 squad was also training just beside the seniors on Saturday, the players were keen not only to impress the coaches, but also to inspire the new generation.
It was also a first for Nick Blackwell, joining Emmanuel Revert in the coaching staff (see announcement).
For this week-end, the squad was honoured to welcome Gill Burke, 51-caps former Irish International (played in two Women's Rugby World Cup, won two 6-Nations tournaments etc.) as special guest for their training.
With over 8 hours of training in 2 days, the players were challenged on their individual skills, as well as working on set pieces and offensive play. Captain Sabrina Walti: "I was happy to see so many new faces, including very promising players. This was a good start to the season, and I hope that the team will keep growing, always moving forward together."
The intensity will continue to increase with the Match in Schaffhausen on the 13th of April 2019 against France Gendarmerie. The players' selection for the game will certainly be a mix of new and returning players, as the coaches are looking to establish the strongest possible training squad for the second part of 2019.
Trainings will then resume during the summer to prepare the November games.
