The 2022-2023 season suddenly took a longer path this week-end as Suisse U20 qualified for Rugby Europe Championship … which will be held in October 2023 in Spain or in Portugal.

After 4 intense training camps along the season, Suisse U20 staff, Patrice Philippe and John Etheridge, made their final selection and called 23 young talented rugby players to compete against Bulgaria for a chance to play the Rugby Europe U20 Championships against the top European Nations.  The game took place in Winterthur at Deutweg Stadium in front of 200 spectators who bravely supported their champions despite a very windy weather.

The weekend started with a final training session at a local school on Friday evening, which gave the U20 Staff a final time to ensure the players were fully familiar with the game plan for the following day.  On game day, the Team was quickly into « game mode » focus with a Captain's Run scheduled at Deutweg Stadium at 9:00am for the final adjustments.

Kick-off was given at 2pm.  Lead by Captain Joshua Byrne, and despite a heavy wind and a rainy weather, Suisse U20 squad was rapidly into motion with the forwards dominating their Bulgarian opponents, especially in the scrums.  Bulgaria fought with a good spirit, and great courage, but this time the Swiss players were just one level above their opponents and were able to score 8 tries overall for a 60-0 win.

It’s a great achievement for the Swiss U20 squad which played with 10 new caps this week-end.  This win means that Switzerland will be attending the Rugby Europe U20 Championship in the Autumn.  So actually the hard work begins !!… See you in 2022-2023 for this continuing great sporting adventure.
